Health Disparities and Determinants of Health

What makes Sarpy and Cass Counties a healthy place to live?

Being healthy depends on more than seeing a doctor when you feel sick. The conditions in which we live affect the health of individuals, families and communities.

Social Determinants of Health (SDOH)

Our health is shaped by more than just medical care. It is influenced by where we are born, grow up, live, work, and age. These factors, called Social Determinants of Health, include things like income, education, access to food, and the safety of our neighborhoods.

The staff at the Sarpy/Cass Health Department work to identify and address these Social Determinants of Health to influence and develop local services, programs, and policies so that everyone has the opportunity to be healthy. The Department collaborates with local and state organizations to increase opportunities for residents to achieve:

  • Safe housing and neighborhoods
  • Access to health services
  • Educational and economic assistance
  • Early childhood development
  • Access to nutritious foods and physical activity
  • Language and literacy skills
